The Promise (September 2008 after Gator’s home loss to Mississippi)

I just want to say one thing.

To the fans and everybody in Gator Nation, I’m sorry, extremely sorry.

I promise you one thing, a lot of good will come out of this.

You will never see any player in the entire country play as hard as I will play the rest of the season, and you will never see someone push the rest of the team as hard as I will push everybody the rest of the season, and you will never see a team play harder that we will the rest of the season.

God bless.

Winged Foot Scholar-Athlete Award banquet (May 2011, Keynote Speaker)

(Excerpts)

“I was invited to come here last year and, due to being drafted by the Broncos and having OTAs, I couldn’t miss practice. I had to miss it, and I’m sorry. I’m extremely honored to be here this year and very excited.”

“Thank you to everyone who is involved, because it is very special what you do. It’s very inspirational to me to get to meet you, to get to know you. Over the past year and a half to get to understand what goes on and what you do is truly an honor. It’s very prestigious and I am very humbled to be here.”

“I believe that athletes, students, individuals deserve to be praised when they have worked hard to accomplish something. This event is not for me. I don’t deserve to be honored. I haven’t done anything. But you athletes, you have accomplished a lot that is extremely special. I am here to honor you and to say, ‘Well done.’”

“It’s incredible what you’ve done. It’s inspiring for me because you are the best of the best. You are leaders, you are role models and you’re the best of your generation. Through my speech tonight I hope you’re encouraged, I hope you’re inspired, I hope you can learn something. But also know that I am inspired by you, and to keep it up.”

“Along the way there’s going to be a lot of obstacles, a lot of adversity, a lot of people who will tell you you’re not good enough. I’m here to tell you that you are. Everyone that tells you that you’re not is because they didn’t accomplish something.”

“All of you facing tough decisions in your life right now, having to pick between schools, having to decide what you want to do with your future, I’ve got a little advice for you — trust God with it and do what you’re passionate about. That’s why I went to the University of Florida. I chose to go with someone I believed what passionate (Urban Meyer).”

“Success comes in a lot of ways, but it doesn’t come with money and it doesn’t come with fame. It comes from having a meaning in your life, doing what you love and being passionate about what you do. That’s having a life of success. When you have the ability to do what you love, love what you do and have the ability to impact people. … That’s having a life of success. That’s what having a life of meaning is.”

“For all you young people, you’re going to have an opportunity to do a lot of things in your life. Choose to do what you love. Choose to do what you’re passionate about, not what gives you the most money, not what gives you the most fame. That is fleeting, and that is fake. That will never give you happiness.”

“Every day that I step on a football field, baseball diamond, basketball court, classroom, event, whatever it is, I try to live my life with passion.”

“Passion is not adrenaline. A lot of people can get adrenaline when they start something. They can get real fired up and motivated. That’s not passion. Passion is when it’s hard. Passion is when you don’t want to wake up early in the morning. Passion is when you don’t want to stay up late studying but you do. Passion is something that comes from deep down inside. It is not when I’m on the field and I throw my arms up (in celebration). That’s adrenaline. Passion is all the nights you can’t see me working. Passion is all the nights you stay up training for your football game. Passion is when you’re tired and still doing what you know is right and what needs to be done. That’s passion.”

“Do you love what you do, and do you live with passion? If you do, it will affect everyone around you. Passion is contagious because not a lot of people have it. People want to be around passion. Ultimately I believe that it will make you successful in whatever its is that you want to do. If you have passion in your life, if you are willing to sacrifice for what you love, I believe you’ll be successful at it. I believe all of you (Winged Foot nominees) have done that, and that’s why you’re here.”

“Do you have the ability to finish strong? So many people have the ability to start something. Very few have the ability to finish strong because it’s very hard. There are a lot of trials, a lot of tribulations, a lot of adversity you will all face many times. Do you have what it takes to finish strong?”

“Things are going to be hard. There are so many obstacles. But if you already realize that and set in your mind that, ‘Whatever comes my way, I’m going to overcome it,’ … you’re going to finish strong, like we did in 2008 (at Florida) in winning the national championship.”

“Sports mean a lot to a lot of people in this room, but at the end of the day, they’re just sports. It’s not life. It isn’t just finishing strong in sports. Do you have what it takes to finish strong in life?”

“Do you have what it takes to finish strong in your sport, to finish strong in your job? More importantly, do you have what it takes to finish strong in life? Do you have what it takes? For all you athletes, I believe that you do. You inspire me, you encourage me. God bless you. Keep it up. Have passion, love what you do and finish strong.”

That’s what I wanted to show and it didn’t matter if it was the first play or the last play or if we were down by 42, I was going to be the same player and I was going to still give everything I have because that’s all I have to give. Every time I step on the field, I’m going to give my whole heart regardless of the score.”

I will admit that I was not a huge fan of Tim Tebow in the beginning of the season. I am indeed a Denver Bronco’s fan mainly due to the love of my life Andrea’s hometown. I didn’t like his sloppy passes and his need to always try to make running plays. However, the more I get to know Tim Tebow from his background and attitude, the more I like the guy.

He truly is an overall good guy who displays being humble and a positive outlook on life. Tim does not have a bad bone in his body even faced with trash talk and negativity, Tebow decides to take the higher road and doesn’t gloat, trash talk and even cuss.

His relentless attitude on his religion and not caring about what other people may think or say is refreshing. He stands up for his convictions and morals which is very rare these days. Hope has always thrived in Tim Tebow even when he was born he was a miracle in surviving the complicated pregnancy his Mother was going through.

I can truly say I respect Tim Tebow now and below are some of the examples that he has shown through quotes and positive attitude given.

Tebow: “He reminds us that strength comes in many forms & some people have what can be described only as a gift for winning, which isn’t synonymous with any spreadsheet inventory of what it supposedly takes to win. This gift usually involves hope, confidence & a special composure, all of which keep a person in the game long enough, w/enough energy & stability, so that a fickle entity known as luck might break his or her way. For Tebow that state of mind comes from his particular relationship w/his chosen God & is a matter of religion. For someone else it might be understood & experienced as the power of positive thinking, & is a matter of psychology. Either way it boils down to stubborn optimism & bequeaths a spark. A swagger. An edge.” ~ Frank Bruni of the New York Times

1. . ”Success comes in a lot of ways, but it doesn’t come with money and it doesn’t come with fame. It comes from having a meaning in your life, doing what you love and being passionate about what you do. That’s having a life of success. When you have the ability to do what you love, love what you do and have the ability to impact people. … That’s having a life of success. That’s what having a life of meaning is.” – Tim Tebow

2. “I am not better than anyone else just because I play football.” - Tim Tebow

3. ”Just like @coachsmartvcu said, …one important thing in sports, it doesn’t matter what anybody else says. #Fuel.” – Tim Tebow via Twitter

4. Mom used to quote Isaiah 64: about waiting on the Lord. It doesn’t mean being complacent. It means understanding that he has a plan, and that we’re not the ones in control. In the meantime, we need to strive to use our gifts and abilities fully. – Tim Tebow

5. “”Along the way there’s going to be a lot of obstacles, a lot of adversity, a lot of people who will tell you you’re not good enough. I’m here to tell you that you are. Everyone that tells you that you’re not is because they didn’t accomplish something.” – Tim Tebow

6. “You just try to be nice to everybody and treat them all the same. Treat them how you would want to be treated.” – Tim Tebow

7. “The lows are disappointing but that makes the highs much sweeter. That’s what drives you to compete” – Tim Tebow

8. “First and foremost I’ve got to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and my teammates. Those guys believed in me and stuck with me and we stuck with each other for 60 minutes…We have a resilient team.” – Tim Tebow

9. “Something I learned early in college (is) to not worry about what I can’t control…But what I can control is my attitude, my effort, my focus every single day and that’s what I’m trying to worry about.” – Tim Tebow

10. “Just keep believing…This is an opportunity where great things can happen and let’s be great right now…Everybody believe and we went out there and achieved it because our faith and our relentlessness to keep fighting.” – Tim Tebow

11. “You’ve got to worry about the next play…Keep believing because people aren’t always going to like you but you have to believe in the people around you…You’re going to get knocked down but it’s how many times you get back up.” – Tim Tebow

12. “We take it one day at a time. You have to get better. We’re focused on tomorrow.” – Tim Tebow

13. ”@NyGiants4eva I’ve never quit anything I’ve decided to start…that’s how you succeed at achieving your dreams.” – Tim Tebowvia Twitter

14. ”Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” – Tim Tebow

Updated Bonus:

Added 1/3/2012

“The biggest reason I don’t (consume alcohol) is because (if I have) a glass of wine, I don’t want to be responsible for a kid looking up to me and saying, ‘Hey, Tebow’s doin’ it — I am going to do it.’ And then he makes a bad decision.” – Tim Tebow via USAToday

“I don’t have to live the roller coaster other people live with my life,” Tebow says. “It’s hard because people try to have an effect. I try to stay centered in my faith and my family and the close people around me.”- Tim Tebow via USAToday

“It still was a good day because before the game I got to spend time with Zach McCleod and make him smile. Overall when you get to do that it’s still a positive day and a good day. Sometimes it’s just hard to see but it depends what lens you’re looking through. I choose to look through those lenses and I got to make a kid’s day and any time you do that, it’s more important than winning a game, so I’m proud of that.” – Tim Tebow Post Game NY Times

“Any time you’re getting beaten like that, you just continue to fight. It doesn’t change who you are, how you play, how you go out there – you should be the same at all times. Every time I step on the field, I’m going to give my whole heart regardless of the score.” - Tim Tebow Post Game NY Times

I was reading an article about Indra Nooyi (Chairman and CEO of Pepsi.) She was being interviewed by CNN Money and it talked about the best advice she ever got. It was very inspiring to say the least, she talked about always trying to “assume positive intent”

“When you assume negative intent, you’re angry. If you take away that anger and assume positive intent, you will be amazed. Your emotional quotient goes up because you are no longer almost random in your response. You don’t get defensive. You don’t scream. You are trying to understand and listen because at your basic core you are saying, “Maybe they are saying something to me that I’m not hearing.” Article Link

The basics are there and that is not jumping to conclusions based on high emotions. We all done it before and that is responding quickly to people with negative thoughts and actions. One negative will eventually get the other to be negative and you don’t want two negatives fighting each other.

Another point of view is when you think negatively right away that the person confronting you is being malicious or diabolical. Again this goes to the root of if you think and respond negatively, you are just going to fuel the negative fire. Diffuse those thoughts and try to keep a level head until you fully grasp the picture. Most of the time people just don’t wake up and say they are going to be vicious to you just because. There is a reason why this person is confronting you this way and it would be wise to find out why before you go guns blazing.

Top Chef Angelo Sosa

A good example is Angelo Sosa from Top Chef, he is known for being hands on with his competitors food and providing suspicious advice to his competition. Granted this is a competition but already people assume right away that he is not to be trusted and that he is trying to sabotage the competition by making himself look good.

Well season-mate Tiffany Derry witnessed this firsthand on Season 7 but when she came back with Angelo in Top Chef All Stars, she had a different outlook on the situation. She said that after reviewing the situations from last season she came to conclusion that Angelo is not being malicious when he helps and that ultimately the Chef’s food are their responsibility and nobody else’s.

My Real Life

Personally, I actually ran across this situation recently as-well at my current company. My boss came down on me hard about my Manager duties that were being questioned. I just came back from Holiday Vacation and the duties she was referring to happened right after I left for my vacation. My first gut reaction was to think that my boss has it out to get me and that she never liked me. All those defensive emotions were being played out in my head and of course I took the wrong road by being confrontational back, showboating that my actions were not to be in question and bringing up reasons why I am so good at my job, overlooking the specific events that she brought up.

Eventually after my knee jerk reaction I did calm down and accepted my mistake that happened and left feeling demoralized because I had a mistake and I couldn’t justify being right in the conversation. It wasn’t until I got home and read Indra’s article that made me realize that maybe my Boss wasn’t being malicious and that she was just actually doing her job in addressing a problem that came up. I felt so bad afterwards because I came to the conclusion that it was indeed an innocent feedback from her and I should be more focusing on how to learn from my mistake. That is after-all the best way to be successful is to learn from your mistakes and move forward.

Positive Reinforcement

On January 23rd 2010 I had the privilege in help organizing and speaking at a Social Media Event in Virginia Beach. The event had many different specialty fields in marketing and a diverse audience that all came together for one main event.

It was a long journey from September 2009 to January 2010. We had some new to speaking events and some were veterans but all in all the event was still a stressful journey, like most events. We had lost a lot of potential speakers and had to change the line-up a few times but eventually it did work out in the end and what a bittersweet relief it was. It was still an amazing feeling accomplishing a vision that you had portrayed a couple months back and manifesting it into a successful reality.

Looking back, I seem to of taken this event by the reins and took on a leadership role within the group. I had noticed that it was very difficult to sometimes keep people focused on the task at hand and keep them motivated as it was almost a 6 month process with a lot of Holidays in between. I have found that staying positive and giving my group positive reinforcement and excitement has helped tremendously both before and after the event.

It is the little things that can have an impact on people’s lives and I believed in my group which contributed to more success. Sometimes people just need someone in their corner to encourage them it’s going to be ok and to make them dig up the courage and believe in themselves it will be a successful event.

Again there were a lot of obstacles that could of spelled disaster for the event but I chose the high road and focused on strengths and not weaknesses. Without the push in the right direction and motivation of doing a great job with the event, some members of the group could of easily drifted away or crumble. As a leader, we must show positive reinforcement within our group as a testament of believing in them for without it then why should they believe in you.

“A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves”

Break The Mold

Don’t wait around for change to happen, step it up and make things happen. Create an atmosphere of positive confidence that shines forth not only within your self but by others.

Remember that positivity is contagious and don’t just focus on becoming more self confident, break the mold and become a leader too. A leader leads by example and inspires others from the actions they bring forth. Start by building your positive strongholds by surrounding yourself with like energy driven peers.

Break the mold in accepting that you must not sway from either going too over the top or just enough to keep you under the radar. Throw that mindset away and believe in yourself that the actions you do are powerful, even when you think no one is looking. That is what being a Justifed Lion is all about, noble & confident in the actions you do to improve your life.

Yes, you are capable of being a leader

Yes, you can achieve greatness

Yes, you can inspire others

Believe in your actions, become infectious and showcase your noble & positive behaviors.

Teach a friend one tip every day

Go out and help the needy

Recommend inspirational books to read

Change your habits for the better

Whatever you decide to do, don’t look back in second guessing yourself and becoming shy. These are great things you will be achieving and wear it with pride.

Become a Justified Lion…Become a Leader!

Leadership is highly valued in the workplace, which is why a master of engineering management, MBA, and other business degree programs put a strong focus on leadership in the curriculum.
